CHINA FACTS
 Field Ripe with Harvest
 - Focusing on the University Student

 • We are asking you to partner with us to reach China; help us train and teach the teachable, students at the university level; Men and women who will be China’s future leaders. The Chinese students are eager, enthusiastic and hungry for the meaning of life that is only found in Jesus Christ.

• We estimate that currently less than 1 out of every 200 students at the University have become true believers in Christ.

• The Chinese students are in desperate need of spiritual and psychological guidance. Their culture never discusses such sensitive topics as sexuality, HIV, STD, unplanned pregnancy, psychological issues (depression and addiction), and business and situational ethics. The average university has 3-5 abortions a week. (Ref BMC Public Health)

• The suicide among the Chinese is the highest in the world and the 5th leading cause of death in China. CNN.com posted in March 2002, that 1 out of every 5 Chinese between the ages of 15-34 die taking their own life. The suicide rate is 25% greater among Chinese women. Radio Free Asia in Sept 2003 reported that 250,000 suicides are committed a year, almost 2 times the world’s average.

• The organization’s beginnings started with David and Susan Varella teaching English at a University in Henan, Province, China. In 2002 the Varella’s sold their home in Palm Beach County, Florida to go to China in answer to God’s call.

• The University is located in Henan Province, a rural area in inland China. The Province is smaller than the size of the state of Texas and has almost 1/3 the population of the U.S. It has a high HIV rate and is one of the poorest provinces in China. In our city where we work, there are two government churches to serve a population of 750,000.

• Operation World estimates that there are less than 130 million (7.5%) Christians in China today; including those in the underground church.

• For 20 years westerners have helped advance Chinese culture with their manufacturing, technological and business expertise, using English as the gateway. Westerners have been a desired commodity, an asset to the nation's development and a voice in modernization.

• A large majority of Western English teachers are Christians. People with a heart for evangelism. Few people would work 40-50 hours a week for a few hundred dollars a month unless there was a purpose and reason for the sacrifice.

• Since the 1980’s foreign English teachers and business people have been educating the Chinese Culture. Westerners have been teaching business and marketing strategies, manufacturing processes, electronic and technological innovation, critical thinking skills, ethical business practices, educational and learning techniques to the Chinese. China is well on the way to practicing and teaching these principles and techniques themselves. In a few years there may be no need for Foreign Experts.

• Increasing numbers of Chinese preteens speak fluent English. Within a decade the Chinese will have little need for a native English teachers.

• Americans now have the advantage and are able to draw the crowd in China. When a westerner talks about anything, especially religion, the Chinese students listen.

• Since China is a communist country, there is a concern that the door of opportunity could close and significant restraints imposed again upon human rights after the Olympics and World Exposition.

• Chinese university students are in need of a Christian worldview and Biblical resources to spiritually and doctrinally prepare them to become mature believers. Christian Bookstores are needed for study. Christian Counselors are needed for spiritual guidance. Short-term Training Schools are needed to disciple and teach students.

• China Mission Project-Varella, Inc. wants to provide a Christian center that will funnel Christian students into a 6-9 months Bible training program to equip them to go to the nations by beginning with their own.

• The 18-25 year old Chinese students are impressionable. These are the students who could be the future Evangelists of China and their OWN 10/40 window. • Many missionaries in the field perceive that, within 15 years or less, China and India will be the countries God uses to evangelize the East, Middle East, and Africa. England evangelized in the 19th century, America in the 20th century. In the 21st century it may be China and India.

• Please partner with us to raise up young Chinese men and women to go out and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the people that Westerners are unable to reach. This is our call. This is the Great Commission. Will you help us reach the largest country in the world, with 25% of the world’s population, and prepare THEM to fulfill Christ’s great commission?
